About the Water Centre of the WULS

History

       The project entitled Scientific and Educational Centre of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science – Water Centre of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences was implemented within the scope of Action 13.1 priority XIII of the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment for 2007-2013. The Agreement for funding of the project was signed by the Information Processing Centre (OPI) and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences on 30th December 2008.

      The direct aim of the project was to build a modern scientific and educational object of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science. The general aim of the project was to improve the University in educational and scientific activity as well as impact on the national economy. The implementation of the project was supposed to increase the number of students and PhD students, and thus the increase in the numbers of scientists and specialists considered the most important for supporting the economic development.

      The official opening of the Scientific and Educational Centre of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science – Water Centre of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences was held on 16th June 2010. The then Minister of Science and Higher Education prof. dr hab. Barbara Kudrycka attended the celebration.

      The project Scientific and Educational Centre of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science – Water Centre of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences was awarded the 1st prize in the category Infrastructure of the higher education by the jury of the nationwide competition called Funds and Science. The conference and the award ceremony took place on 8th December 2010 in Warsaw. The award for the Warsaw University of Life Sciences was collected by prof. dr hab. Wiesław Bielawski, the Vice-Rector for Development. The University was also represented by prof. dr hab. inż. Jerzy Jeznach (the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science), dr inż. Wojciech Sas (the Deputy Dean for the Development of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science) and dr inż. Ewa Bieńkowska-Mochtak (the Director of the Research and Training Organisation Center of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences).

      The Laboratory – the Water Centre was established as a department of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Science by Resolution no. 1 – 2010-2011 of the Senate of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The facility has been made available to employees, scientists and students since the beginning of the academic year 2010/2011.

       In 2010-2019, in the Laboratory – the Water Centre, apart form educational and scientific activity, the following events were held:

1. Trips from schools from different parts of Poland.

2. Annual events such as: the Builder’s Day, the Ecological Engineer’s Day, the WULS-SGGW Open Day.

3. National and international conferences organised by the departments of WULS and external entities.

4. Visits of national and foreign delegations.

5. Meetings of comissions, science clubs etc.

      On 1 October 2019, the Laboratory – the Water Centre was transformed into the Water Centre of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The Water Centre has become a separate interinstitutional department subordinate to the His Magnificence Rector of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. This change has been related to the implementation of the new Act of 2 July 2018 – the Law on Higher Education and Science and the new Statute of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences of 1 October 2019.

The Water Centre of the Warsaw University of Life Science supports the educational, scientific and promotional activities of the Institute of Civil Engineering and the Institute of Environmental Engineering.

Location and structure

      The Water Centre of the WULS is located on the main campus of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, in the district of Ursynów, at the corner of Nowoursynowska and Ciszewskiego streets. The total area is 14 600.0 m2. The Water Centre of the WULS comprises:
1. The main building with a development area: 1 954.8 m², total area: 5 565.3 m², usable area: 4 557.4 m², cubage: 28 167.0 m³. There are laboratories equipped with  scientific equipment, educational and exhibition halls in this building.
2. The Water Park which is  a unique facility on a national scale. It is used for popularisation of knowledge on water cycle in nature and the principles of shaping and  implementation of hydrotechnic projects.
3. The Weather Station which is used for the monitoring of air quality and the measurements of selected meteorological parameters. The station works  in the air monitoring network of the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection.
